Hi
Has anyone got photos of main line ballast trains please?
Do they use KD60 dump cars?
Or to put it another way ...... do KD60 dump cars get used on main lines or only for industrial spoil?

Paul
I asked the same question in the models thread. Ralph replied that he had recently seen a long ballast train formed of them on the mainline.
Cheers

Re: KD60 dump cars - used on ballast trains?
Folks,
Use of KD 60's as ballast wagons.
These vehicles dump to one side or the other, an ordinary ballast wagon dumps to the centre or both sides.
The one side dump , even if one did alternate left and right hand side dumps, would leave large dumps alternating from side to side along the track.
The ballast would then have to be shovelled back onto the track, perhaps by blokes with shovels, perhaps by some sort of front end loader.
I would reckon that using KD 60's as ballast wagons would be an emergency measure.
Regards,
Bill,
Melbourne.

Re: KD60 dump cars - used on ballast trains?
Do you actually mean KF60 dump cars?
I confirm that in France ballast is dumped using mainly hoppers with a central dump or less often right and left lateral dump. A confusion may come from a rubble train used to brace the railway embankment.

Thanks all
I guess my basic question boils down to..........
I now have 12 of these. What is the most prototypical use for them?
