"A bit of everything" for today:

Getting closer to casting the hand brake platforms:

The same for the HXN3 plow/end sill:

Another old project: super-detailing the CMR DF4B. These two will be a light blue and cream 7720+7721 pair (they will go equally well with coal-filled C62/C64 and dark green YZ22). I am contemplating finishing one as the dark red and cream 7732, but will have to check if I have the correct depot markings for that one on the decal sheet. I'm using the last days of sunny and dry weather to do the solvent-based parts of the paint job. Prior to that, however, the side wall gaskets had to be corrected: these protrude very much on one side of the CMR Line model, but are very faint on the other side. I applied UV-printed 3D-decals to enhance the smoother gaskets, and sanded the ones on the other side back a bit to have approximately the same thickness on both sides:

This morning, the shells received cream white stripes for a start. Tamiya TS-7 is not my particular favorite, but so far the closest out-of-the-can spray paint approximation of the typical cream white on many CR locos:

An update before painting continues:

I took another close look at pictures of the dark red 773x that were delivered to Liuzhou depot (宁局柳段) in the mid-2000s. They lack the MU connectors which I already put on the two DF4B shells – so this time, the decision will be in favor of the 7720+7721 pair.

Nonetheless, after using the mechanisms for the HXN3, I will have some spare DF4B shells left, and may finish one in dark red with cream stripes for a static model. It will be good company for the DF7D – at least the green pair that are allocated to "sort of" the same depot.

Cheers,
Zsolt

The solvent-based spray paint jobs are now finished for the DF4B:

Also, I did the castings for the HXN3 and the boxcars:

It's been a while since last time, had some really busy months at work. Also, my metal etching contact dropped out of business (gave up on etching and retained 3D printing only) which halted the boxcar projects for a while.

No new etching contact yet in sight, but I did some experiments with toner transfer on 0.1mm copper foil. The failure rate is quite high, but the technique costs next to nothing, and the resolution is good enough for ladders if I pick out the better pieces of a batch, and do some careful post-work. These are now prepared for the P61:

The grills on the access door windows on the W5S/W6S are still out of reach for this technique, so those will likely be done the hard way, with wires bent and cut individually. Will try some steel wire once I get to those cars...

Work continues with de-burring the castings that have been sitting around for a while:

Next, I'll have to find something that is rigid enough to keep the underframes from warping, and weighs around 8–10 grams to get enough weight and lower the center of gravity of the cars. Time to look for some suitable scrap metal in the basement...

More progress with the P61: most detail parts were installed, and the cars received black primer:

The brake wheels and brake platforms will be installed after completing lettering, weathering and final varnish; hopefully within 1-2 weeks.

Some progress over the weekend: lettering done and some light dirt applied to selected cars:

This week, I'll work on weathering details as rust spots, rain marks, etc.

Thanks... it's rather a matter of picking the right technology for each detail though...

Meanwhile, the P61 are more or less finished:

Some info on detail parts:
-Underframe details: Micro-Trains underbody subframe for 50' cars (had to shorten them a bit to fit underneath the P61)
-Brake wheel: https://item.taobao.com/item.htm?spm=a1 ... 8574325322
-Brake platform: shadow mask material salvaged from old CRT screen

Zsolt
